This is an important and necessary book.  If you know someone in an assisted living facility, someone who cannot live day to day without some kind of help, then My Adventure is a book you should read.  I am confident that those who live normal lives in our own homes taking care of ourselves have no idea what life is like hour to hour, day to day for someone who must depend on others to have any quality of life at all or even remain alive.  This book, written by someone who experienced years as a quadriplegic totally dependent on others and then slowly recovered, gives a clear picture of the challenges, disappointments and heartaches of a dependent life.  It shows how vital it is  for every “patient” to have their own personal advocate, someone to be sure they are getting good care, ask the questions they may not be able to ask, be there for them and remind them that they are still loved and not alone.  It further illustrates the importance of maintaining friendships with those who have moved into a new setting and highlights how assisted living caregivers are frequently the unsung heroes of those who depend on them.  I wish this book had been available before my mother went into assisted living.  If you know someone in care of others, read this book; it is worth its weight in gold.
